Why do evil and suffering exist?

Today, I will talk about evil. People often wonder why evil and suffering exist in the world. Both evil and suffering were not created by God. They are actually a result of the fall of humans and the fact that humans sinned (Father Spyridon, 2022).

Humans were created in the image of God. They were not created with the tendency to sin, but they were created with free will (Father Spyridon, 2022). We had the ability to choose whether we wanted to sin or stay close to God. Unfortunately, people sinned and we are now further from God than we used to be.

After the fall and as a result of our sin, evil and suffering started taking place. Sometimes, they may even be a chastisement, so that we do not sin more (Father Spyridon, 2022). In all cases though, they are a result of the fall of humans and they wouldn’t have existed without the fall (Father Spyridon, 2022).

In addition, evil and suffering still exist due to the fact that we keep sinning and do not repent. If we repented and sinned no more, things would change. We do not have to be stuck in this forever because we already sinned. There is still time. We can change and things can change, if we do.
